Sign-On Letter for Portland Sustainable Procurement Policy

The City of Portland passed a resolution in 2015 which ensured conflict-free procurement of some tech devices. Since then, the City has implemented a slow roll out of the policy. Recently, Portland's procurement office has proposed a new, more comprehensive Sustainable Procurement Policy for the city which will give preference to companies that are working to source conflict-free minerals (3TG - tin, tungsten, tantalum and gold) for their products. The vote has been postponed, so the Portland City Council will now vote on the new policy on August 22. 

Since federal legislation has called for transparency in the conflict mineral supply chain, 79% of 3T mines in the Congo are conflict free. This is a dramatic change from 2010, when the UN stated that "almost every mining deposit was controlled by a military group."
